چکیده

We report systematic HCN(1-0) observations (and CO observations) of a sample of 53 infrared (IR) and/or CO bright and/or luminous galaxies, including 7 ultraluminous infrared galaxies, nearly 20 luminous infrared galaxies, and more than a dozen nearest normal spiral galaxies. This is the largest and most sensitive HCN survey of galaxies to date. All galaxies observed so far follow the tight correlation between the IR luminosity LIR and the HCN luminosity LHCN initially proposed by Solomon, Downes, & Radford (1992), which is detailed in a companion paper (Gao & Solomon 2003, Paper II). We also address here the issue of the HCN excitations. There is no particularly strong correlation between LHCN and the 12μm luminosity, in fact, the weakest among 4 IRAS bands. There is also no evidence of stronger HCN emission or a higher ratio of HCN and CO luminosities LHCN/LCO for galaxies with excess 12μm emission. This result implies that the mid-IR radiative pumping, or populating, of the J=1 level of HCN by a mid-IR vibrational transition to excite HCN emission is not important when compared with the collisional excitation by high density molecular hydrogen. Furthermore, large velocity gradient calculations justify the use of HCN(1-0) emission as a tracer of high density molecular gas ( ∼3× 10 4 cm) and give an estimate of the mass of dense molecular gas from HCN observations. Therefore, LHCN may be used as a measure of the total mass of dense molecular gas, and the luminosity ratio LHCN/LCO may indicate the fraction of molecular gas that is dense.

Ultraluminous galaxies in the local universe (z≤0.2) emit the bulk of their energy in the mid and far-infrared. The multiwavelength approach to these objects has shown that they are advanced mergers of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Galaxy-galaxy collisions took place on all cosmological time-scales, and nearby mergers serve as local analogs to gain insight into the physical processes that lead to t...

We show that simple models of the chemical and spectrophotometric evolution of galaxies can be used to explore the properties of present-day galaxies and especially the causes of the observed variety among disc galaxies. We focus on the link between " classical " spirals and Low Surface Brightness galaxies.

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Among early-type galaxies with almost circular isophotes E0 and E1 galaxies are, at 99.3% significance, more luminous than face-on objects classified as S0 (0) and S(0) (1). This result supports the view that rotation and " diskiness " are more important in the outer regions of faint early-type galaxies than they are for more luminous galaxies of very early mo...

A velocity dispersion has been measured for the luminous globular cluster M31 037–B327, claimed to be the most massive star cluster in the Local Group and to be a young “super star cluster” that has survived to an old age. M31 037– B327 has a mass comparable to that of M31 G1, but not significantly larger. Although near the upper end for the mass distribution of globular clusters, it is not an ...
